Uncover a Frog (Uncover Books)
by Aimee Bakke
How cool is this mom. Your kids can learn the inner workings of this amazing species. Layer by layer, in this new title in the popular Uncover It series. Frogs: They swim, they leap, they hop, and some can even fly. There are poisonous frogs, hairy frogs, singing frogs, albino frogs, and even glass frogs with translucent skin you can actually see through! Hey, and you don’t really have to dissect the froglet’s let them hop and go eat bugs.
Passion For Frogs
Who doesn’t like a frog? I mean what’s not to like, first, they start out swimming like a fish, then you can, over time, watch them grow legs! They play leapfrog all day. Some of my fondest memories as a kid were growing up near a golf course. Some times we would go out and catch bull frogs around the ponds where they hung out. Now a bullfrog is one big frog.
One of the things they do is provide a service to humans. And, its something to write home about! What do they do? (They Eat Bugs) Now, I know mosquitoes serve a purpose, just don’t them land on me. Did you know you get less mosquito bites because the frog is around? They love that insect! They eat all kinds of insects. Could you imagine what your hometown would be like with out the frogs around your home? We would all have to wear bug suits.
They have a long tongue that pops out at lighting speed, and the bug becomes a quick, tasty, snack. You’ll have to watch someone who has taking a slow video of them. Yep, it’s very hard to see a frog do this.
Chytrid Fungus
Here’s The Thing, a fungus called chytrid has moved in to their ecosystem. That’s just a big word for the place the frog lives. But kids, at this time in human history, frogs from all over the world are in trouble. And the United States has this fungus happening too. This fungus is having the amphibians leave the planet fast.
I learned recently that frogs let us know how our ecosystem, or how their home is doing. They are one of the first species that lets us know. Why? They live on water and land.
The frogs are facing shrinking habitats. That means their homes are getting smaller. And pesticides, and drugs that are tossed down the toilet go into their homes. This is not helping the frog that lives on the water and land. I found some suggestions what we could do at our homes to help.
Who Is Helping the Frogs?
They’re no cures for this fungus yet. But a bunch of scientists are trying to find the answer to unlock this mystery. I hope it’s soon, they’re smart people in schools wanting to find a cure

Panama Golden Frog
Cheyenne Goes On Frog Mission
Check this out, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is launching a great project to go capture as many frogs from Panama that don’t have the chytrid fungus. They want to capture 20 to 40 types of frogs.
This is just one zoo that has decided to help the frogs. Just imagine if a lot of zoos from around the world did the same thing? Kevin Zippel, director of Amphibian Ark, a branch of the World Conservation Union, which is supporting captive breeding programs. He said for $50,000 to $100,000 could save one entire species of frogs! That’s what I want to hear!
Did you know that the Panama Golden frog is poisonous? I read they have enough poison to have 1200 mice pass? Wow! And they are one tiny frog. I saw one at my local zoo. Anytime you see a brightly colored frog, it’s going to be poisonous.
“If each of the world’s largest zoos just took on one species each, we’d be done,” Mr. Zippel says. Doesn’t that sound hopeful? Contact your zoo and see about them breeding some frogs in your hometown?
Good Luck Frogs
In panama, the golden frogs are considered very good luck to have one of them around. I know people care that these four-legged webbed species are here for generations to come. Once again, its man that has to intervene for another species to survive.
How We Can Help Frogs
Oh, one little added things we can do to help frogs.
• Throw drugs in the trash instead of the toilet.
• Use organic fertilizer and weed killers.
• Preserve wetland habitats.
• Acquire pets from reputable captive breeding programs that aren’t collecting from the wild, and don’t release pets into the wild
What Is This?
African Bull frog!
Can you believe this? When I saw this picture for the the first time, I could hardly believe my eyes. I thought the bull frogs of my hometown were big! Here’s a wierd animal fact for you.
Did you know they are carnivores? That means they eat meat? They eat all kinds of things, certainly a bug’s nightmare. And the heck with your cat to take care of your mouse challenge, they’ll eat them for you. I wonder how long their tongue is? I sure would love to hold one of them, wouldn’t you?.
